Galaxy at Mesa - Brittany Garcia

The project I am proposing is a mural of a picture of the galaxy taken from earth. I chose this area of the Mesa campus because I liked the two metal vents and they reminded me so much of something space related, a star trek feeling if you will. I was inspired by Barbara Kruger from the UCSD Stuart Collection to include a textual message, Barbara combines words with images to speak to her audience in more ways then just her image. The message I wrote "Starstruck" is there to let people know first of all that the image is that of stars and second to allow something to be taken away from the image. I wanted the viewer to be able to be at school but also have an out of school experience and fantasize a bit.
I believe this image would add to Mesa College's atmosphere and remind people of the beauty of outer space. People so little get to see the stars because we are mostly daytime creatures and a reminder of whats up in the sky at night might be refreshing. College can get stressful and the image of a natural scene can help purple take a break and enjoy art.

  2. Nicely done. The space theme combined with the hand-written appearance of the text definitely give it that fantasy element that you described in the project description. As one gazes into the "stars" of the mural, the writing and paint splatter effect remind us that although we have to come back to reality at some point, we can at least step back for a second and venture into the unknown.

  24. Very Nice. I like how there is a black crevice down the middle of the stars, with lighter blue gradients around it...it give the piece dimension.

  25. I like how you used the two piece of the structure to create a background and a foreground. I think this piece would encourage a bit of daydreaming as well, which is not always a bad thing considering the stress college life can bring at times.
