"Fading Footprint at Mesa" - Rachel Goetz

I would like to propose the instillation of this mural on the Mesa College Campus. I was intrigued by Barbara Kruger’s Another, in that she created a space that was aesthetically pleasing, while functioning as being informative. This piece attempts to embody both art and purpose, while also signifying a lifestyle shift. In a world where there is overpopulation, pollution, and climate change, living an environmentally conscious lifestyle is of increasing importance.

In this mural, the footprints and phrase “reduce your footprint” call upon the cultural knowledge of the “green” movement. Though this phrase has almost become noise of little substance through its overuse, I thought that having footprints on the ground that a student could follow would individualize the experience and bring a different slant to the importance of having a “reduced” lifestyle.  I also thought that having immediate ways of partaking in this lifestyle, such as the recyclable trashcans to the right, would instill in the viewer that making “green” choices can be easy.

Therefore, I think that installing this mural would be a benefit to both the campus and the viewer because it creates a visually interesting space, demonstrates a message, and challenges the person walking in the footsteps.

An Eye to the Sky- Keith Hassett

Well I love churches for their architecture aspect.  The ceilings can be some of the most amazing pieces of art.  I am a bit of a nomad and live all over the place.  Just spent a year & 1/2 in Germany.  I believe this photo came from a church in Portugal.  So the trompe d'oiel or something that looks real but is not is quite intriguing to me.  I wish I could have something like this in my office space.  Always wanted to bring the outside in.  So for those of you that may not know about the Catholic churches, most of them have this type of opening that represents the eye of God watching down upon you.

My proposal is on one of the Mira Mesa College buildings. My design was inspired by the Space Invaders that I have seen at San Diego City College in downtown by the street artist Space Invader. His art work consists of colorful mosaic tiles replicating the old arcade games little aliens. I have added a row of robots to add a welcoming, fun and visually pleasing environment to the college. I believe it would be something that young college students would enjoy looking at. Art Heals and Art therapy has shown to relieve stress in young adults and what a better way to forget about your worries than to see a design that lifts your spirits as you’re doing a mundane act such as walking to and from a class. As the  visual society that we are why not add something that is benefitting emotionally unlike the usual propaganda that we see on a regular basis such as billboard advertisement. Or the unnecessary street “gang” tagging that we have all come across on.

I still have a lot to learn but I wanted to incorporate the Mesa College Mission on the Mural somehow. It didn't come out as well as I hoped but I still like it. The hands are supposed to symbolize hope.
