Inspiring Architecture - Katherine Estudillo

Before

After

Detail

Architecture students spend many hours a day in their classrooms. Studio classes are usually about four hours a day, multiple days a week, and the drafting and other related classes are also long and tedious. The time that is spent in the classroom usually extends beyond the actual time spent in class. It is not atypical for architecture students to sleep minimally and spend 10-20 hours a day on their projects, especially when there is a deadline.  These students need inspiration to keep their spirits up and to encourage them to greatness. To get outside of the classroom and see an image of inspiring architecture would be beneficial to all of them.

The art on the wall is a rendering of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, which was designed by the architecture firm Herzog and de Meuron. This building has won international acclaim and is an exemplary piece of modern architecture.  This particular piece of architecture as a work of art will help these architecture students refocus and persevere.

Celebrate Life with Art and Culture - Jose Moreno

Before
After

I am proposing the following piece to inspire all to celebrate life with art and culture.  My inspiration for this piece came out of admiration of works and styles from the murals of Chicano Park, Shepard Fairey, and the urban style of the famous and ever so secretive Banksy.  This piece will definitely bring life and color to the Mesa College Art Center.  Hopefully it can help to inspire future artist and also the appreciation of art and culture on campus.  I believe Mesa College would be a perfect place to install such a piece as it is rich in diversity.

Thank you,
Jose Moreno

Dive In to School - Geri Bartusch

Before

After

Why go back to school after you retire? According to Ellen Freudenheim, baby boomers are returning to school for several reasons. She listed twelve reasons in her article but I returned to live out my dream. I retired after 30 years and was inspired to go back and dive in. I believe everyone needs a little inspiration, hope and to be able to visualize that your dreams are within reach, no matter what your age, if you just take that first step. Just "Dive in to a school" and watch the magic take place right in front of your eyes.
I originally posted "Take the Climb" and after reviewing the comments decided to post my original piece but the concepts are identical. Education is priceless and knowledge can not be taken away, no matter the state of our economy.

"Unity" – Katimarie Morse

Although this structure is now mostly surrounded by staff parking, it still remains a vital and visible part of the Mesa College campus. I propose a change of scene to this structure, which is lacking in zest. Through this art project, inspirations of the importance of unity and bonding will take place. It is crucial for teachers and students to be united. Both have goals: one to teach and the other to learn. Unity acts as an agent for both. It creates a positive environment in which others desire to be around. The mural I am proposing will be a constant reminder to work together, regardless of ethnicity or any other differences that may be present.

Art is powerful. It can easily be used to promote a variety of ideas. In this case, my inspirations came from the brilliant mind of artist, John Baldessari. He is known as a conceptual artist who was not afraid to take a new approach. In his work, "READ/WRITE/THINK/DREAM," he collaborated everyday items, such as books and colors, and composed a mural that would encourage students to go "beyond the day-to-day grind" and "envision new worlds".

Waves of Hope and Renewal

My proposed art installation is a small art mural that represents our close ties to the ocean, and the constant renewal it goes through.  The sun is represented to show our usually warm weather here in San Diego.  The mural will add character and color to this drabby building.  This mural will help make the environment more alive and energetic.  This in turn can add more enthusiasm to learn by the students. I should be awarded the bid based on the small use of space and low costs for paint resources. - Ed Skillion

The Mesa Student - T M Abunadi (MULT 121)

In the proposal I suggest we utilize new LED technology or more advances projection technologies to make better use of the walls at our school. Not only will we be able to project art, but the images will be forever changing and could potentially post important information that concerns students. In this particular piece, I feel it is an accurate representation of many Mesa students who congregate and smoke together as a social activity/break in - between classes. The student also overlooks the canyon below and is in a high position to reflect the attitude and feeling of Mesa college students.   - T M Abunadi (MULT 121)
